Now that you have been hired, it is time to say hello to the Wawa Family Health Teams' clientele.

Christa Melo is our newly hired Mental Health Social worker who joined our team in June 2024.

She/her completed her Bachelor's of Social Work at Toronto Metropolitan University. Christa has always been interested in working with people to understand the ways in which our experiences, environments, biological make up, thoughts, emotions and behaviours all impact each other and influence us in unique ways. Through this work, Christa gets to help people help themselves and emphasizes the importance of being a safe space for people to talk and share their stories.

Personal Interests

As a mental health provider, Christa notes it is important to have interests and hobbies - personally, Christa enjoys hiking, swimming, crocheting, reading, travelling, animals, and music.

Previous Experience

Christa's previous experience involves working with seniors at a retirement home and individuals involved in the criminal justice system at the John Howard Society in Toronto. Through out her schooling she completed placements in Wawa as an on-call crisis responder with WAVS, helping develop and establish the Wawa Community Outreach Program and most recently was an assessment counsellor with the Canadian Mental Health Association working with individuals living with mental health and/or substance use challenges.

Current Role

Christa is working with individuals aged 18+ living with mild to moderate mental health conditions (either diagnosed or un-diagnosed), including but not limited to depression, anxiety, and substance use.

Final Note

When you book in with Christa, just know she is looking forward to meeting more people in the community and sharing her knowledge, while also learning from those whom she will work with and their unique experiences and wisdom.

The Wawa Family Health Team would like to acknowledge the land in which we hold our practice of medicine on and the land of the people we serve. We are grateful to reside on the lands and home of the Anishinaabe and Cree and respectfully acknowledge that this land is Indigenous land that has been inhabited by Indigenous people from the beginning. We are grateful for the opportunity to connect here, and we thank all the generations of people, who have stewarded and cared for the land for thousands of years. We recognize and deeply appreciate the historic contributions of the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples both in shaping and strengthening this province and country. The Wawa Family Health Team promotes a healthier community through creating a safe space that welcomes diversity, inclusion, and acceptance for everyone. We are committed to the challenge of Truth and Reconciliation, and we are learning that acknowledgement of the past and current traumas will aid us in providing equitable and culturally appropriate care. We promise to express humility in our daily practices to provide the utmost patient-centered care we can.
