New Program! Wawa Family Health Team is Offering Spirometry Testing

Spirometry is a simple test that measures lung function by the amount of air inhaled and exhaled, as well as the speed of exhalation. It is funded by Algoma Ontario Health Team (AOHT) and completed here in the Wawa Family Health Team by a spirometry certified Registered Nurse.

What are the benefits to having this program?

We use results to monitor or diagnose lung conditions such as asthma, COPD, and other breathing conditions.

Who Can Have This Testing Done?

If you are identified by your Doctor or Nurse Practitioner to be eligible for the program, they can refer you. We do not accept self-referrals at this time.

You may not be able to complete spirometry if you have certain heart conditions, pressure issues in your head or eyes, recent sinus or ear surgery, recent chest or abdominal surgery, or other contraindications.

What Does Testing Involve?

The test involves using a special piece of equipment called a Spirometer, and you are coached throughout the test with instructions. The disposable mouthpiece is placed in your mouth, your nose is clamped with provided clips to avoid air escape. You then breathe in and out normally, followed by a deep inhale. After that you blow the air out with as much force and as fast as you can, when your lungs are empty you then take a breath in and that is one “blow”. You may have to do up to 8 blows to get 3 acceptable readings. After that, we administer Ventolin and wait 15 mins, then repeat the test to see if there is an improvement after the inhaler has effect.

When can you book and how long does it take?

Emily Boudreau is our Certified Registered Nurse who is currently providing the program to clients. She has been certified as of Sept 27th, 2024 to complete spirometry. Emily will be booking half to full days every couple weeks to complete the testing.

The appointment takes approximately 45 minutes as we administer Ventolin half way through the test and needs to wait 15 minutes before continuing so it had maximal effect on lung function.

Important Reminders for People before they take the test:

  • Please don’t exercise, smoke or vape for 1 hour before your appointment.

  • Please don’t consume alcohol  for 8 hours before your appointment

  • You may need to hold your inhalers for 4-48 hours before your appointment, you will be told this when you are booked by the RN
